Rebuild Dominica is proud to share the following update from IsraAID:
Ms. Bibi has been living in the church shelter in San Sauveur since Hurricane Maria hit the Caribbean island of Dominica. Her husband, Mr. Albert, suffered a stroke a few years ago. They lost the roof to their house during the storm, and the continuous rain that followed damaged even the few belongings she was able to save. Ms. Bibi is helping out at the shelter, cooking for the residents, while taking care of Mr. Albert. She remarks; “I’m glad that I at least have my life. The rest doesn’t really matter.”
IsraAID’s Emergency Response team in Dominica, together with the San Sauveur community volunteers, helped rebuild Ms. Bibi and Mr. Albert’s house. After distributing tarpaulin across the villages in south-east Dominica, IsraAID’s team identified the most vulnerable, who were unable to rebuild their houses on their own. Then, together, in a joint communal effort, they helped put the roof back over their heads.
Tonight Ms. Bibi and Mr. Albert will once again, sleep in their home. Tomorrow, our team moves on to help the next family re-construct their home.

Rebuild Dominica, Inc has inspired many into action: both the young and more seasoned of the Dominican diaspora. One young Dominican is Samora “Sam” Christian, who successfully launched a clothing drive from her campus at The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).
Sam is currently a senior at UMES and created the campaign in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Other supporters of Dominica sprung into action to support her campaign. She was able to fill and ship 4 full barrels of donated clothing items with the help of her parents, Gabriel and Joan Christian.
The young Christian shares updates on her blog for those seeking to support her #DressDominica campaign. Rebuild Dominica salutes this proud daughter of the soil!

Rebuild Dominica Inc. features Dr. Sam Christian, our Coordinator of Medical Operations (on-Island), with his patient Danny Williams: a patient who lost 10 members of his family in Pointe Michel’s ravine during Hurricane Maria.
Williams was introduced to the RT. Hon. Penelope Mary Mordaunt, MP, British Secretary for International Development who was visiting Dominica over the past weekend with Prince Charles. Mordaunt, better known as “Penny”, is a Conservative politician in the United Kingdom who replaced MP Priti Sushil Patel.
Williams, like others who suffered tremendous loss from Hurricane Maria, is a Dominican receiving free medical care from Dr. Sam Christian.

This past weekend, Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales — eldest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh — made a visit to Dominica. Prince Charles is heir apparent to the British throne as the eldest child of The Queen.
According to a report from BT News, Prince Charles stood among the ruins of Pichelin, a village that suffered an extreme blow from flooding and winds during Hurricane Maria. The Prince was reported as sympathizing with the surviving villagers in Pichelin.
BT News further reports, “The Prince of Wales has praised the “resilience” of the people of Dominica as he saw for himself the damage wreaked to the Caribbean island by Hurricane Maria.”
